Why Mammograms Matter

Breast cancer affects nearly 180,000 American women each year. It is the second most common cancer among women in the United States according to the CDC. Regular screening mammograms can help identify changes in breast tissue before symptoms develop.

The American Cancer Society and other healthcare organizations recommend that women discuss breast cancer screening with their healthcare provider to determine the screening schedule that is appropriate for them based on age, risk factors, and family history.

If you notice changes in your breasts, such as a lump, skin changes, nipple discharge, or persistent pain, contact your healthcare provider for further evaluation.

3D Mammography

ORMC offers the Genius™ 3D Mammography™ exam.

Three-dimensional mammography creates multiple images of the breast that can assist radiologists in evaluating breast tissue. This technology provides additional views of breast structures that may not be visible on traditional two-dimensional images alone.

The SmartCurve™ breast stabilization system is designed to provide a more comfortable experience during compression for many patients.

Following the exam, images are reviewed by a radiologist and results are communicated to your physician.

SmartCurve System™ Breast Stabilization System

Many women delay mammograms because they are concerned about discomfort during the exam.

The SmartCurve™ breast stabilization system features a curved compression surface designed to better match the natural shape of the breast. The system distributes compression more evenly across the breast and may improve comfort for some patients during imaging.

The exam process remains similar to a traditional mammogram and is performed by trained mammography technologists.

What to Expect During a Mammogram

A mammogram is a relatively short imaging exam that takes pictures of the breast to assist radiologists in identifying changes that may require additional evaluation.

For your appointment:

  • Wear a two-piece outfit if possible.
  • Avoid deodorant, powders, lotions, or perfumes on the day of your exam.
  • Bring any previous breast imaging records if requested.
  • Inform your technologist if you are pregnant or think you may be pregnant.
  • Arrive a few minutes early to complete any necessary paperwork.

Your technologist will explain each step of the exam and answer any questions before imaging begins.

Breast Biopsy Services

If an abnormality is identified during breast imaging, your physician may recommend a biopsy.

A biopsy involves collecting a small tissue sample for laboratory evaluation. ORMC offers stereotactic and ultrasound-guided biopsy procedures to assist physicians in diagnosing breast conditions.

Most breast biopsies are performed on an outpatient basis. Your care team will discuss the procedure, preparation instructions, and next steps before your appointment.

Bone Density (DEXA) Screening

Bone density testing, also known as a DEXA scan, is used to evaluate bone health and assess the risk of osteoporosis.

This painless imaging exam measures bone density and may be recommended for women based on age, medical history, or other risk factors. Talk with your healthcare provider about whether bone density screening is appropriate for you.

Pink the Basin Mammography Assistance Program

Regular breast cancer screenings play an important role in breast health, but cost can sometimes create barriers to care.

ORMC partners with Pink the Basin, a Permian Basin nonprofit organization that helps eligible women access mammograms and certain breast imaging services when financial circumstances may otherwise prevent them from receiving care.

Through community donations and fundraising efforts, Pink the Basin provides financial assistance for qualifying patients throughout the region. Funding may be available for women who are uninsured, underinsured, or experiencing financial hardship.

The organization works alongside healthcare providers across the Permian Basin to help expand access to breast cancer screening and diagnostic services for women in our community.

If cost is preventing you from scheduling a mammogram, ask a member of our breast care team about Pink the Basin assistance when you call. For information about eligibility or to schedule a mammogram, call 432-582-8500.
